I have the iPhoen 12 Pro and the Samsung Note 20 Ultra. On the Note 20 Ultra, the 120Hz can be switched off by lowering screen resolution to only 1080p. It saves battery power on the power-hungry phone.

Since the iPhone 13 Pro is supposed to have 120Hz screen and a lot of iPhone screens are made by Samsung, I'm wondering if it'll have the same option allowing the user to drop the phone from 120Hz to 60Hz. (again, to save power.... especially since my experience with the iPhone 12 Pro has not been so great, compared to my previous iPhones)

Thanks!

Ahh... remember this tweet by Jon Prosser.

Maybe these settings were real all along...

cool! that mean the iPhone 13 Pro won't have the permanent 120Hz like some other phones.

I guess this also means that the screen is still being made by Samsung?(since it can be switched between 120Hz and 60Hz like my Note 20 Ultra) The battery life saving is quite significant, at least on my Note 20 Ultra.

Probably. You can do that on iPad Pros with ProMotion displays (2017 models and later) by going to Settings -> Accessibility -> Motion -> Limit Frame Rate.

Its gonna be really interesting to see how many people keep 120 mhz On or turn it Off with their Iphone 13 Pro's, and the amount of battery power saved. My missus turned it off after a few days on her Galaxy S20 Plus to save battery, as she is an EXTREMELY heavy user lol. Even with it Off , she has to charge at least 2-3 times a day.

I keep my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in 60Hz mode almost all the time... except when I want to play games(which is quite rare). I know 4 other friends who have the same phone and they also do the same. Keeping the Note 20 in 120Hz decreases the battery life by 1 to 2 hours, depending on usage.... (not much, but still noticeable)

Sure hope Apple will allow the same on iPhone 13 Pro screens.

I just remembered that Pro-motion has a Variable refresh rate, and so may actually positively impact the battery on the 13 Pro models.

Probably this.
Apple doesn't tend to give obvious selectable options like this. I'm sure it will be similar to ProMotion implementation of the iPad Pros.

Turn it straight off 👉📱 end up with 15 hours battery life. 😳😂

No need for 120hz on iPhones, unlike them android phones that lag with it on or off. 🤦‍♂️😳😂

I turn it off on my S21. Got a headache when I first tried it.
Setting the UI animations to 0.5x in developer setting is much more useful in making the phone feel faster than these high refresh rates.

A switch is a bad idea. I want intelligent adaptive refresh rate. If I'm scrolling, then sure 120 hz is nice for smooth animation. If I'm staring at a webpage, then be my guest and drop it to 60 or even 30.

on my Note 20 Ultra(and all previous Android phones), I always completely turn off all animations in the developer menu. I just prefer everything to go as fast as humanly possible. :)

I've always wondered if there's a way to disable *all* animations on iPhones. (never found a way on my last 3 iPhones)

When Apple offers such a feature in iPhones, it will be ProMotion.

Apple said:
The stunning, redesigned Retina display in iPad Pro features ProMotion, a new technology that delivers refresh rates of up to 120Hz for fluid scrolling, greater responsiveness and smoother motion content. With ProMotion, Apple Pencil is even more responsive with an industry-best, 20-millisecond latency for even more fluid and natural drawing. ProMotion also improves display quality and reduces power consumption by automatically adjusting the display refresh rate to match the movement of the content.

@beerseagulls Apparently, the most recent guess err rumor is for next year, not this.

I'm sure they will. Apple was waiting for LTPO panels instead of adopting it sooner. By default it will be probably be on all the time like Pro Motion on iPad Pros, with option to turn it off in accessibility.
Yes I think the reason why they didn't have 120hz refresh rates on the iPhone 12 series was because Samsung wouldn't be able to make enough LTPO panels.

I've used it on the s21 ultra. It was nice enough but not a deal breaker. I can live without it. The difference between it and my iPhone 12 pro max wasn't that much.
