I am saving up for a new one, and need to know when to stop, and whether the $99 will still be intact thanks

still? current iPhone model, 3GS, is $199 for 16gb. you are short $100.

side note: I thought people in Michigan have much bigger issues to worry about (not that people in Washington have any less).

The $99 is for the 3G version now, not the 3GS.

Given the previous releases, the next iPhone will be $199 for smaller size and $299 for larger size.

To be blunt, if you're quibbling or at all worried about the price of the phone upfront (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that) you probably shouldn't be getting the iPhone to begin with.

The above advice doesn't apply, of course, if you only need to pay for the cost of the phone and someone else is covering the contract.

Indeed. The (increased price you will pay for month) x (24 months) is so so much greater than the initial price (even if you bought the $299 model).

The reason I have an iPod touch instead.
