Case companies like Otterbox are saying the 8 version will fit the 7 but the old 7 version won’t fit the 8.

I don’t know if there is a real change or just repackaging.

Speck says they will fit but the 7 cases might be too tight. The 8 version of the cases are just slightly larger

I'm starting to doubt the case will fit, Apple lists all new cases as 7/8 but I have the Smart Battery Case which Apple does not say is compatible with iPhone 8 and if the case fit wouldn't it be compatible. I notice some older cases are listed as compatible with iPhone 8.
So it could be to tight, I think the iPhone 8 is anywhere from .1mm - .3mm bigger in size depending on what section of phone.

Yes they do. Same dimensions.

The dimensions of the 8 are *slightly* larger if you compare the 7 & 8 on Apple's website.

Apple now has the Apple branded leather and silicone cases listed as "iPhone 8/7" cases on their site, listed as "new". They also are not available for in-store pickup until 9/18 (at any store).

They probably tweaked the case design slightly to accommodate the *slightly* larger iP8 models, making them backward-compatible with the iP7.

May be it's because the Apple iPhone 7 leather and silicone cases are stretchable, so they can still fit the new iPhone 8. Third party iPhone 7 cases which are very rigid may be too tight to fit the iPhone 8.
