i tried looking through the threads and didnt see anyone answer the question directly....will it be done automatically or will you have to upgrade via itunes. im asking due to the fact that ill be away from my desktop for a week...thanks guys.

Based on what I remember reading, it's going to be a carrier update. That probably means an update via iTunes.

We've been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches - and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

If I recall correctly, you can also get a new profile by:
1) Turning off device.
2) Remove SIM card.
3) Wait a few moments.
4) Insert SIM card.
5) Turn on device.
6) ???
7) PROFIT!!!

just seconding the carrier update info. that's the only useful info I got during my visit to the genius bar Tuesday. that's exactly what my rep told me.

what about for us people with a jailbroken 3Gs, who still haven't updated to 3.1? Is 3.1 mandatory for MMS?

Anything running 3.0 will get the new bits enabled. There there after 3.0 just the carrier file is needed to turn them on.
