Will the new iPhone sim card work on the old iPhone?

I wanted to know I have a first generation iPhone and its not in use because I purchased the new white iPhone 3g I wanted to know am I able to use the new sim card from white phone and input it into my old iphone? Will it work so I can make phone calls like its activated? That would be cool if it did. I haven't tried yet? Please help?
