For those of us who travel over seas, a logical fit would be skype for the iPhone to avoid those massive connect charges: all we'd need is a wifi site. Has anyone heard anything about this?

in the original presentation on March 6, (i think) steve/scott said that apple would allow VoIP programs to work on a wifi connection but not on EDGE/3G. so it is possible, just gotta get skype to develop it

I heard rumours that Skype were developing this, but I wouldn't be surprised if VoIP software was treated as a special case by Apple. Apple are wanting to partner with operators, and will not be wanting to allow the use of software that diminishes the value of the cellular network for voice calls - such a thing would damage their relationships.
