Hello! I have a question regarding the ever so mind-boggling connectivity between an old iMac, and a new MacBook Pro.

I have been looking for an easy way to connect my 2009 iMac to my brand new 2017 MacBook Pro with touch bar. And I suddenly came across this cable on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073S6V9CD/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3F0NMVOASBEZV&psc=1

Does anyone know if the cable is going to work? I am a bit confused about the whole thunderbolt / no thunderbolt, mini displayport-issue..

An answer would be very much appreciated!
Tank you :)

What exactly are you trying to achieve?

All I want to do is to connect the iMac and use it as a second screen to my MacBook Pro. I think it's called target display mode? I'm not sure though.

From apples documentation it seems that you need to use the Thinderbolt3-to-2 adapter and then connect it with a mini display port cable. I never tried it do no idea if it actually works.

I wouldn't try the cable the OP mentioned in post 1. You don't want to damage anything. You might even ask Apple first (either ask at an Apple store or call them up).

I'd follow leman's advice in post 4 above...

Thank you all for the quick replies! I think I'm gonna hold off on this one, and maybe talk to someone at apple or something.. Thanks again :)

It won't damage anything... its a standard video cable. It is just unclear whether it would work for the purpose OP wants it. But you can certainly use it with an external monitor that has a miniDP input...
