I have an iphone with ATT.. Is this ipad mini compatible with ATT? Or is it wifi only? http://www.target.com/p/apple-ipad-...-14213695#prodSlot=medium_1_1&term=ipdad+mini

Also, how do you tell if its wifi only or if its compatible with a carrier and if so which ones? It doesn't say in the specs... if its Verizon or ATT

Says right on the description on the iPad mini (Wi-Fi). Sorry no cellular data with that model. You'd definitely pay more for a cellular version.

The link you provided says wifi only so I'd say its not the cellular model

As a point of comparison, I did a search on target and found this.

A far cry from the 199 price in your link

thanks everyone. I was hoping maybe they forgot to mention cellular but it was included anyways. No wonder its so cheap. Also the model thats on sale is older and not retina but that doesn't bother me.

Do you guys feel its necessary to have an ipad with cellular if you live in a big city like L.A? Or should you be able to get by using it at home and outside a Starbucks/McDonalds trying to pick up free wifi?

I don't have a cellular ipad, but I see it this way:
1. Use your cellular when there's no wifi, take advantage were there is wifi.
2. Only use wifi.

Do you want to pay for a plan for your iPad? It's up to you.

You may also be able to use your cell phone as a hotspot.

I live in Houston. All of my devices are cellular. LTE is so much faster than wifi, I only use wifi at home. I don't want to trust public offerings. Too many bad stories about hackers getting in your device in public places using free wifi. But that's just me.

Seriously? For $199 you are not going to get cellular capability on iPad.
