In a music recording program of mine, I want to have one headset playing a metronome sound and another headset playing a piano sound.

Since a Macbook only has one output this isnt possible. But what if I bought this?

I could pan the metronome to the right and the piano to the left. Would this work? I know an audio interface would be better but I'm on a tight budget. So would this work? (I already have an adapter that would let me plug this into my macbook output)

That won't fit in your mac. It is 1/4" you need a 3.5mm stereo plug to 2x 3.5mm mono sockets.
Search for. "3.5mm Stereo Plug to 2 x 3.5mm Mono Jack Splitter Adaptor - Gold Plated"
