What version of iLife do you have? Only iDVD '05 supports external drives and it still is flaky with those.

I confirm that it DOES work-- I did it on my G3 iBook (it took FOREVER!)

Basically, it's a way to save a disc image, and then you burn it using Toast or Disk Utility
