Having been stung several times for the ridiculously expensive roaming rates leaving the UK for sunny Europe, which surely is just what the iPhone should be brilliant for as a tool in a foreign land - sort roaming out mobile operators, I wonder if buying Tomtom app instead will be enough to give maps and POI without needing to spend on data roaming.
Unlock with Ultrasn0w and use a local SIM card for calls but use Tomtom for finding your way around. Does that sound a goer? Researching buying data packages in France, it doesn't seem any cheaper than buying an O2 bolton, which in my experience gets chewed up v fast indeed and is pretty useless if you use your iPhone for info/nav etc.
