iPod touch Will turning off 'sound check' make my songs sound better?

I know that it is designed to normalize the volume amongst all the songs in the ipod's library which I don't mind as long as it doesn't change any of the songs original sound. Does it do this?

The only change is that most songs will end up quieter, and some louder, due to the iPod trying to keep all the songs at a similar volume. No difference that just changing the volume yourself between songs, other than its now automatic.
