Hope this question hasn't been asked before. I did a search and could not find any results.

I recently asked AT&T to unlock my iPhone 4 which is out of contract. I wanted to give the phone to my mom after my new iPhone 5 arrives tomorrow!

AT&T told me that the phone qualified for unlock and that I just had to backup and restore my phone through iTunes to get the iPhone 4 unlocked.

Now since iOS6 came out yesterday, I went ahead and downloaded it BEFORE unlocking my phone by restoring my phone.

Is this going to be a problem affecting the unlock of the phone?

hope this question makes sense. Thank you.

Thank you just making sure! Restoring now...

How do I know whether the phone is unlocked or not?

It makes no difference since the defining factor is your phone and contract. The OS has no bearing.

What I had to do to get mine unlocked after the told me it was done. I tried numerous times and it wasn't unlocking

  1. Backup to iTunes
  2. Restore
  3. Setup as "New"
  4. Restore again
  5. This time it gave me the message that it was unlocked.
  6. Restored from my backup in step 1

Best way to unlock in iTunes is not to backup and restore. Just insert a non AT&T sim, like a cheap simple mobile sim, and hook up to iTunes. The phone will say needs to be activated. Just unplug for ten seconds and plug back in and iTunes will say "Congrats...your phone is unlocked".

BTW, these unlocks are for sale on ebay for less than $10 for any iphone 3GS, 4 and 4S. Just search "iphone factory unlock" and sort by buy it now and lowest price.

I unlocked all four of my iphone 4S to sell since I'm getting the 5.
