EDIT: Any existing VZW subscribers who have received your iPhone 4S, would you mind calling and seeing if they will do a SIM unlock for you and report back?

-----
Over the past few years, most VZW global phones have had their GSM bands locked to VZW's own SIM card. Once you were a VZW customer for at least 6 months, you could call VZW Global Support (1-800-711-8300) and they would give you an unlock code for free so you could use non-VZW SIM cards while traveling abroad.

The process is a bit different to unlock the iPhone; carriers must send your IMEI to Apple's server and then you apply the unlock through iTunes. Will we be able to do this through Verizon?

EDIT: This article turned out to be false, disregard

Just saw this article which says the Sprint iPhone 4S has an unlocked SIM out of the box, while Verizon will unlock it once you've been a customer for 60 days (and presumably if you've already been with VZW for a while, they will unlock it immediately if you call the Global Support number

Very good news.

Bump...just saw another guy over at the VZW community forum who received his 4S (apparently he knew someone at his local FedEx and they let him pick it up.)

If anyone here manages to get their VZW iPhone 4S today would you mind calling and finding out if you can do a SIM unlock and report back?
