Considering the S25U but its not much of an upgrade, supposedly comes with a 6 months free sub for their AI. Then $8.33 mo, I don't know about you but I'm sub'd out. This reason by itself gives me pause as this upgrade is really a gateway to an AI sub. What do you think?

No. I don't use AI to begin with. Now if AI can actually interact with me, like teach me how to cook or something like interacting with the computer on Star Trek, I might think about it. Hopefully the spell checker might still be free.

I am not a Samsung user myself but watched a review of the S25 Ultra and this subscription was mentioned. I know this topic was also discussed in the iPhone forum about a potential option in future. I think when you've paid already silly money for the device, whether thats the S25 Ultra or iPhone 16, asking for an additional subscription on top is cheeky. I would happily opt out of that tbh. I like some of the AI stuff, but not enough that I would pay separately for it and I'd imagine many would also feel the same.

And the phone makers really need to create a chart showing what features I lose when my free trial ends. Is it just going to a dumber/older model of the same AI, or are the features gone?

Samsung said they could charge by now, but still no news. I'm sure they won't charge unless Apple does. Until then, it will be free.

Working in science I've found some interesting use cases for Gemini's research-based model but not enough to keep paying monthly for it. Prior to getting a 6 month free trial I was on the beta test/research list which I've reapplied for now. I find Assistant more than adequate for the innumerable timers and reminders I need to set myself.

Well first it's not Samsung's Ai it's Google's.
.yes collaborated in some part with Samsung but it's really all goole with a minimal limited set of "agents" if you could call them that to connect to Bixby for more on device and specific processing cause we'll Gemini when 1st developed and continually has NO intention to fully support OEMs 2st party apps and setups.

I seen this a mile coming when I got the S23 and seen 1st dropping of Samsung Messages no longer pre-installed on Flip 6! Then after security and watch update of 9.2024 the annoying pop-ups to "upgrade" to Google Messages!

The latter is a FULL downgrade for me and Google welcomed on their promise to submit base code for international compatibility to the GSM governing body almost 4yrs ago! Shady shingles man!

So no I'm not buying any subscription for Galaxy Ai when the real features I use can be done on device which I prefer. Not to mention saving a LOT of data transmission which seems imperceptible for now yet as it evolves on future models ever year ea h new feature will consume considerable data from cloud Ai LLMs and Libraries - especially when REAL agents kick in!

Samsung had the right idea BUT went the wrong way by choosing Google for cost effectiveness and 1st to market. Thwy have a VERY robust Ai already in their BeSpoke lineup of products and ecosystem that SHOULD'VE been utilized and bolster Bixby fully!

This would've helped their offerings remain unique over the lifetime of their product cycles vs only 3 mths when competing OEMs get same features also from Google just with different marketing names while the Pixel remains unique with a few more features JUST for itself. I'm not down for that.

If it’s ever something I really use then I would but not based on my use as it stands today

I mean let’s look at the current features being offered by Samsung AI:
1) Now brief
2) Circle to search
3) Audio eraser
4) Auto trim
5) Generative edit of photos
6) Call transcript
7) Writing assistant
8) Interpreter
9) Natural language search of your photo gallery

For me none of those are compelling reasons to pay a subscription.

I guess if one’s job was helped out by something like call transcript or writing assistant I could see people paying for it? Then again, it all comes down to price. On the Apple side of things, I pay $1 per month for 50gb of iCloud storage. Now if they charged $5 - $10 for it instead? Hell no I would cut off the subscription entirely.

Samsung (and Apple) have a tightrope to walk early on to make AI really affordable for people and get them used to it in their daily lives before they raise prices very slowly over time. What if early on it’s just $1 per month? I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t have an issue with that low of a price.

Of course if they keep improving the abilities over time or actually come out with a “killer feature” then all bets are off on the low price but for now it just doesn’t feel compelling ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Circle to search has been the only game changer for me. Like I love using it and think I practically use it everyday.

Would I pay for it? Nope. These companies (Google, Samsung and apple) cannot bang on about AI like they are doing and use it as a marketing tool to sell devices when it still isn't even that good (although I can see it getting very good in future) and they are already charging a fortune for the hardware itself.

I would expect the features that can be done on device only will remain free and only the ones requiring cloud computing will require subscription, which are mainly the photo/image tools.

If you travel a lot or live overseas then the chat translation features by Samsung is a killer feature especially in Line and Whatsapp and other msg apps ;)
