Hello,

As the title suggests.. ever since a new user named Wikinix has come here I have had nothing but frustration after frustration with installing LIMECHAT with this Discord thingy and I am at my wits end to the point of just putting my credit card right here, so someone can help me get this running. the only good thing i can say I have had no issues with it running Linux remix with his instructions, but the IRC thing is really getting to me and since this is no longer 1999 or 2000 or 2001 where ircle can just connect and i can chat to my hearts consent, i am willing to pay someone tonight by credit card $20.00 if they can remotely log into my POWERBOOK G4 and configure this god damn program for me.

Yes, i am trying to stay calm while writing this, but also trying to hold myself back from destroying something in this room i am in.. so, can someone please help me get irc running on my pb g4... I am starting to wonder if I made a TERRIBLE MISTAKE by going back to PowerPC - as if it was not too long ago since 2000-2005 when even then OS 9 was still working with the internet. Now, IRC won't work.

I WILL PAY SOME ONE 20 DOLLARS TONIGHT IF CAN HELP ME GET LIMECHAT WORKING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN AND I WILL SETUP REMOTE LOGIN TO MY SYSTEM.

THANK YOU
ROMAN

H… Have you considered building something like irssi to run from a Terminal window? It can be done with Macports. I‘ve built it on my Power Mac G5, my DLSD G4s, and on my Intel boxes.

Occasionally there may be an abort on building dependencies for something like irssi, but I’ve often found ways around that by selecting some of the yet-to-be-built dependencies which haven’t yet been built (or errored out) and install those first, before returning to build irssi or any of its failed-to-build dependencies. There’s also BitchX and a couple of other dependable, longstanding IRC clients available to build on Macports.

Key with all of this, of course, is there will be the chance for errors which feel like roadblocks, but with a helping of patience, one can work around those errors and roadblocks to get where you wish to be.

What about Xchat-Alpha ? I am using that right now and it seems to be working, just surprised to see an IRC revival. Back in 1999-2000's IRC was booming.

I don‘t know. If it’s working for you, then stick with it! I use irssi because it’s worked for me all the way back to when I had to stop using Homer 0.94 for Mac OS, and I am extremely familiar and comfortable with using its interface.

Unless you’re wishing to run your own IRC server (like ngircd), then if you have a working IRC client like Xchat-Alpha, stick with it and don’t worry too much about trying to run other irc clients!

ok, also I am happy to report Ircle for OS 9 works.

As a meta sidebar:

@wicknix has been on MR longer than you have. His avatar changed not too long ago, which is why you might have mistaken his presence and involvement on PPC/Mac/Linux development stuff around here being somehow “recent” in any way. He is a gem in the work he’s done so far.

I understand that, just I was frustrated with setting up at 1st Linux.. as I want to eventually move my PB G4 1ghz Titanium to Linux, but not really sure what distro to go with. I was also frustrated with the LimeChat and setup of discord. Kept getting captcha errors, but as long as Xchat-Alpha and Ircle work I am good.

Working with Linux, especially on vintage gear like our PPCs, is a continuous learning experience whose expectations for working is tempered by taking your time, expecting mistakes or incompatibilities, and doing the best you can to work around them.

That said, I have successfully installed Debian SID on my iBook clamshell box. It took a lot of complicated manoeuvring and plenty of time and patience, but I managed to do it.

And if you need to take a break away from something not working because it’s frustrating you, then take that break! Sometimes new ideas and with seeing the challenge with a fresh set of eyes can help you find the solution to fix or build what wasn’t working before.
