Winclone moving windows boot camp to the external drive
Do I partition the external drive to NTFS?
Do I partition the external drive to NTFS?
I have been reading the reviews of Winclone and most don,t have many good things to say about it, it is very expensive.
What do people think about Winclone?
I took it off mine after trying to get it from Bootcamp to an external drive ,it did not work. When I last used Bootcamp regularly (c 3 years ago) Winclone was essential for backing up, resizing, moving to external, restoring to new internal drive etc. Apps like AcronisA could backup the data content of your Bootcamp partition, but were not capable of restoring an image of the whole Bootcamp partition to a Mac if a drive failed for example. At that time it was a must have for Bootcamp users (IMHO).
As I say that was three years ago and things may have changed. I have just installed Bootcamp again so expect to reevaluate.
I took it off mine after trying to get it from Bootcamp to an external drive ,it did not work.I looked on Winclone forum and saw that other people on there had the same problem about the different block sizes of the drives and that it did not have the WIM file i managed to get that on with Magnimum Reflect.I tried it again and still came up with the same message i take it that is a standard message about block size and about not having the WIM file. And Tim agreed that it was touch and go to get it on an external drive. So i asked it i could haave a refund they were very quick doing that.I am disapointed that it could not be moved to an external drive. Thanks for mentioning about Acronis not being able to do the task.
So that brings me back to the present using VM FUSION the problem i have now is i get this message
Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe.
Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded.
Failed to initialize monitor device
I have ticked fully access for it and folled this video same message came upI
I took all my VM Fusion off and got a trial version of it ,but i still could not get it on an external drive all was well tell i saw the part where you pick the drive where it is going to go.I did a fresh install of Windows 10 on an external USB SSD box, install BootCamp manually, and everything works fine.
Saving the hassle to clone things.
I think i am confusing things as i have Parallels and VM ware FUSION where i just want one to get Windows on an external drive ,i keep getting message s saying stuff is Parallels when i have all ready deleted it.I see that my IMAC has the same specs as yours Mike, the problem is 256 is not enough to put bootcamp on that is why i want to put it on an external drive.I used Winclone successfully to move a Bootcamp partition from the internal to a Samsung T3 in 2017. Details in This thread. I don't know if this still works.
I have never used VMWare, but switched to Parallels instead of Bootcamp in around 2017/2018, to avoid all the complexities of backing up, managing the BC partition etc.
With a bit of time on my hands this week I installed Bootcamp again yesterday, but not sure I will keep it. All the old problems are there and worst BCA wouldn't let me have less than 59GB Bootcamp partition, which is more than I want to give up to Bootcamp on my MacBook.
Well there was a problem for me doing it.There is absolutely no problem moving a Parallels VM to an external. You just need to tell Parallels where it is. Maybe that isn't the problem you are having.
Uninstalling Parallels by deleting the app will leave a lot of stuff behind, including the VM.
It was the offical site .I have all ready got bootcamp of here the way you say it should be done.I am a bit confused about what you are trying to do now. The only comments I can make are:-
Never click on pop up adverts asking you to update unless you are very sure you know what it is.
You can delete the Bootcamp partition (if that is what you need to do) with Bootcamp Assistant.
Some people use MS-DOS others do it with EXFAT does it make any differance?i looked at your details in the thread.I used Winclone successfully to move a Bootcamp partition from the internal to a Samsung T3 in 2017. Details in This thread. I don't know if this still works.
