Window placement in Mountain Lion

By default, Mountain Lion places new / opened windows in various positions on the screen. I can't quite figure out the pattern, but it seems to be some variation of "smart" placement.

Sometimes, new windows will open on the left of the screen, and sometimes they will open on the right.

Is there a way to force all windows to open centred in the screen?
