Not technically a HomeKit question I think (unless existing Nest devices will indeed get Matter support through firmware updates), but not really sure where else to ask and I'm hoping someone maybe has come across the same question and did find a solution.

We recently got a Nest thermostat installed in our home. Other than a Nest smoke detector, we don't have any other Google Home devices and all other smart home devices are HomeKit-enabled, so are all automations.

I'm trying to find window sensors not for security reasons but to detect if a window is open and if that is the case turn off the AC/heating in Nest. Because right now Nest doesn't work with HomeKit, I'm not necessarily looking for HomeKit-enabled sensors, but obviously it doesn't hurt if they could be integrated eventually.

I'm a little lost where to even start and overwhelmed when trying to google a solution. There seem to be a gazillion sensors available, most from dubious Asia-noname companies. Also, I wouldn't really know how to automate this as I'm really not familiar with Google Home at all (we got the Nest smoke detector before Nest belonged to Google and as otherwise 100% Apple users have no other investments in the Googleverse) and still completely new to smart thermostats to begin with.

Any ideas or recommendations, both for specific sensors and/or how to actually automate this use case?

Thank you!

Eve Door and Window sensor. It supports the Thread protocol, and HomeKit, and will receive a firmware update which will enable Matter support.

If you have the latest edition of the Nest Thermostat, it will be updated to support Matter.

You can then use the Home app on your phone to configure the automation. A HomePod or Apple TV 4K is required for automation.

Oh, perfect, thank you so much!

If you have the latest edition of the Nest Thermostat, it will be updated to support Matter.

How would I find out? Just bought August, so I would assume it's the latest edition? It's the learning one.

Do we already have an ETA for when Matter will come to Nest devices?

A HomePod or Apple TV 4K is required for automation.

We already use our Apple TV for that :)

If you want to connect all your Nest devices to HomeKit today and you just want a quick web interface to get everything set up, this is what you need: https://www.starlinghome.io/

Have used this since they came out in 2019. Takes a few minutes to get it connected and linked up to your Google account, but after that all your Nest devices will magically appear in HomeKit (including cameras).

Once this is installed, any HomeKit sensors (I use Eve Home Door/Window sensors) will work and you can control the Nest with the automation.
