The front page has this today. I'm may try to work around it being in the US with a M4 Pro.

If anyone has done somehow this please post. As I gather, you need a EU credit card to buy form the EU Apple Store. My question is can you avoid this by sideloading or another store that will take US credit cards? That would be the point of deregulation, to some extant I would think. But of course it's probably not going to be working for non EU folks, nevertheless....

as a matter of fact, even Windows 3.1 from 1992 is more capable and less limited than iPadOS from 2025

AltStore is pretty easy to set up on non-EU accounts. It's technically a gray area, so I won’t link or say anything else. A quick Google search will help you though. You'll need a PC/Mac to get around the JIT thing.

Thanks. There's the main app you need, so I'm not sure how to get that. Hopefully Altstore is enough, although the descriptions I've read don'r mention any workarounds. If it does, people should do this, and keep this thread going. I will later today and post back

The object is to get serviceable (tolerable) non-resource intensive apps like maybe document types, and DOS level (or XP level) stuff going were it's not a joke, if possible.

We shall see. Anyways, I'm curious about JIT.

I had Windows XP running on the App Store UTM SE mostly fine. I didn’t run any intensive programs, it was more of a neat (and nerdy!) party trick. It took a while to install, just be patient with it. It will likely run a lot better with the JIT support from AltStore too, been a while since I played around with AltStore's version.

If you do install Windows XP, it's worth mentioning trying out OneCoreAPI with it as well. It basically adds a Vista, Win 7, Win 8, Win 10 and Win 11 compatibility layer into Windows XP. It's extremely hit or miss with what programs work with it, worth a try if you need to use any modern Windows applications. (Edit: Forgot to link it https://github.com/shorthorn-project/One-Core-API-Binaries)

Unfortunately, not really sure what happened with my UTM SE Windows XP install, it just kind of disappeared on me one day. I can’t remember if I deleted it, which I’m not sure why I would. Make sure you make regular backups.

I did the XP SE install and it was just too slow. Proof of concept and fun to set up, but not practical.

The JIT thing was talked about a lot, and now it's another boost for that, which may or may not be enough. Without hypervisor, it's gimped regardless (which is a bit depressing, so there's that.)

And this may actually be more proof of concept, which of course will gets clicks on news sites, but may be more hassle than it's worth.

Why Apple prevents a Parallels type app is understandable, because they seem to think the iPad is safer than Mac OS, and therefore less vulnerable in some way. Maybe this venerability is them allowing apps like Parallels? So Mac OS isn't as safe because Apple allows it to be so?

You can now run UTM with jit (not UTM SE) in the USA after a few steps. What's new is Stikdebug, which is a developer app that enables JIT. Now, it's one of those things where Apple may have missed this, as a loophole, but maybe not. I think in the EU they use Stikjit?

I set it up using a Youtube video. You have to go through a number of steps, but the hack isn't bad. Also, UTM makes installing Windows easy, so there's that. I now have Win 7 and Xp running on an M4 Pro and it runs ok. Not like Parallels, but I didn't expect that. I will post back on exactly how this plays out. It's fun, nevertheless. I do like XP, as a small OS. I think there's something called TinyWin (or like that). I will try a few.

Windows will only run on emulation on iPad... so very slow... because Apple removed Hypervisor for virtualisation from iPadOS in version 16. I have Windows 11 running on my iPad M1 at full speed but I need to to leave it on iPadOS 15...
Frankly I think it's pointless to try to run full Windows 11 in emulation, it's too heavy. Sideloading won't help, Apple has made this option not viable by removing hypervisor

Have you tried it with JIT? Certainly UTM SE is unusable, as is the 'iPadOS 15' option, so we are left with the JIT and UTM (standard).

Considering how lightweight XP is and how powerful the M4 is, it might be usable, but I haven't had time to use it. Will post back.

Always good to complain about hypervisor though. I'll add in my frustration. Hopefully more people will complain.

I don't know what JIT is. I don't have much use for XP. Hardly anything runs on it... At this point I would say unless you have a new (non updated, therefore on the original iPadOS 15) M1, I think you are better off using remote desktop....

On further testing this may actually work ok (needs further testing). Both Windows 7 and Xp run ok with sound. and the mouse works well. No serious lag, although it's little sluggish, but not bad.

There's two reasons I'm doing this; for kicks, and to run 2012 era Windows apps that are made to run this way.

Some apps may run like they did back in the day, on some machines, so in a way you could say they almost 'run natively'. For those who desire this you should check it out. You get an OS template from the UTM 'gallery', and then there's an ip address for the OS ISO you download and then load into the virtual CD to install the OS.

When I had tried UTM SE, which doesn't have the JIT feature (which speeds it up considerably), it was not usable. This is much better. If gamers find it acceptable it must work well enough for light tasks, even for multimedia.

Windows XP worked okay for me on UTM SE. Are you using sideloaded JIT-enabled UTM for your Windows 7 and XP?

Read my post, as I think it clearly says what to do. When you say: "Win XP 'worked' ok", I gather it didn't work ok enough for you to continue using it.

It was usable for me. I didn’t really have a need to continue using it.

I think I mentioned in one of my earlier comments in this thread that my Windows XP virtual drive just kind of disappeared on me. I never deleted it, and it wasn’t in the recently deleted files in the Files app.

I opened UTM SE one day to play around with it as there was an application I wanted to try with it. It was in the OS list, but gave me an error trying to load it. I didn’t bother setting it up again.

And thanks for avoiding my question 😉

Sorry, I lost track. Yes, I'm using JIT. It can be used now in the USA, where it was limited to the EU previously, and before a few months ago only via jailbreak. It's enabled with an app called Stikdebug, that's in the US app store. Apple may yank this, but it's there now. You need a desktop/laptop to generate a pairing file, and use sidestore, and developer mode. That's pretty much it, except for a couple other steps. Check it out. UTM is a good app.

I figure, if gamers find this acceptable, that's saying a lot. If you found SE usable then this will seem like a miracle.
