Windows 7 Via VMware Fusion 3: why does it make noise?

When I'm in my Windows 7 virtual Machine, why does it make a noise as if its processing something when I am not actively doing anything? It sounds like when I was exclusively a PC user using Windows and it made that grinding noise in the background that irritated the heck out of me.
