Windows 8.1 or Windows 7

Hi guys, merry Christmas to you all
Recently I got a crappy laptop for college homework and researches and I put windows 7 on it but it's so slow booting up and opening applications, it's a lenovo g 50-30 and I read on multiple sites that windows 8.1 is much lighter on resources than 7, is that true?
Will my laptop be faster on 8.1?

PROCESSOR: INTEL CELERON N2830 (1M CACHE, 2.16 GHZ UP TO 2.41 GHZ)
MEMORY: 4GB DDR3 RAM 1333
HARD DRIVE: 500GB HDD
GRAPHICS: INTEL HD GRAPHICS 4000

There is no reason that machine should be slow under Windows 7. I have found Windows 8.1 to be faster at start up but be overall about the same in terms of performance as Windows 7.

You're asking help for a Lenovo computer, I'm not sure there will be a lot of specific help with that here at MacRumors, but I will throw in my $.02

I'm running windows 7 at work, and its just as fast as my windows 8 installation on my Mac here at home. I'd say you may have some stuff loaded that is slowing it down. When was the last time you did a clean install of the OS?

I'd back everything up first of course.
