I have a late 2012 imac with a fusion drive, with a bootcamp partition running windows 8. The fusion drive works perfectly well on my osx partition, but, as many others have experienced, very slowly in windows.

What I've been thinking about doing recently is to buy an external ssd, or internal ssd with a case, connect via thunderbolt, and transfer my windows partition to it. However, I have been reading the booting from an external hard drive is not supported in windows 8, at least not without some tweaks. I'm fairly certain I can figure out how to get windows up and running with the guides I've seen available, but I'm worried about potential performance issues or bugs.

I'd like some advice on a few things. First, has anyone done anything like this, and how was it? Second, will external booting be officially supported in windows 8.1? Finally, can anyone recommend a good (roughly 500 GB) SSD for this?

Thanks in advance.
