Hey guys i'm having a little issue installing windows on my MP 1,1, I use boot camp for assistance but every time when it comes to booting all it says is please insertl a bootable disk while the disk is in. But on my MacBook Pro it installs with out a problem? does anybody know what could be going on thanks!

I had the same issues on my 4,1. Just download to your hard drive and then burn the ISO to a disc with disc utility. Boot up holding C or hold option key to select your disc to install Win8. I'd tell you to just not waste your time, I found it to be basically worthless. But maybe I'll try and play with it a bit more.

Yea I have burned it using disc utility but ill try holding c on boot up lets see what happens. I am actually planning on buying it I use it a lot on my MacBook Pro

Windows 8 is certainly starting to grow on me. At first, I imediately jumped onto the "Windows 8 sux omgzzz" bandwagon. But I am starting to like it more and more. Enough that I'm going to buy a couple copies. $40 is dirt cheap for a copy of Windows.

Hey, I just wanted to report that WIn 8 64 bit can be installed on Mac Pro 1,1 or 2,1.

I will be posting a How-To on our site in next few days.

Required some googling and trial and error.

But done right, it even lets you pick Windows boot from "Startup Disk" Control Panel in OSX.

It is 150% easier on a 3,1 or later but it can be done on 1,1 and 2,1.

Don't listen to the nay sayers. All they ever say is "nay".

Well my google skills are letting me down.

When the Win 8 disk is in, it does not appear as boot option on the option-boot screen.

Imagine its the 32bit EFI causing problems...very keen to find a solution to the install.

It's pretty tricky.

You end up making a new ISO out of your existing Windows 8 Install disk and burning it.

I did it in Windows 7.

Once you make it, easy as pi afterwards.

I look forward to that guide. I am thinking of installing windows 8 but I rather wait until a step by step guide is available. thanks

Anyone tried upgrading from using a modded windows 7 x64 that works on 1,1 to 8 x64 using the download edition

Okay, so I just tried the oscdimg on the Windows 8 upgrade ISO downloaded from microsoft.

It doesnt work! The DVD spins up on boot, then the drive ejects the disk. There is no additional boot options (like boot from DVD) in the 'option boot' menu on initial bootup.

Any ideas?

I have win 7 x64 running from a modded boot disk as microsofts x64 disks don't seem to have the boot menu options and i all get is press any key or something.

May need windows 7 installed then just launch the installer through that and it'll copy files needed then automatically reboot into windows 8 setup, bypassing the missing boot options.

I had to edit my x64 7 to get it to let me choose boot from CD but other than that its been perfect  so I might just buy the downloadable upgrade and use that (not sure if its an ISO or just software update type of tool)

The upgrade installer is pretty neat. After it downloads the 2GB or so, it asks if you want to save the file as an iso for burning later, or just run the upgrade then and there.

Im wondering if it's possible to port the files from a modded windows 7 x64 disc that *will* boot to a windows 8 x64 install disc?

By the way I tried switching my firmware between 1,1 and 2,1 (just incase) and it made no difference.

Just to update - running the upgrade installer inside windows 7 works 100%. Running Windows 8 now. Bootcamp installation also went fine.

How do I get windows 8 installed on my 2006 Mac Pro, the install cd won't show up as being in the disk drive when I put the disk into the computer

Is it a dual layer disc? Can your drive read dual layer discs if that's what it's on?

I had a similar issue with a Power Mac G5 and a Leopard disc, which was solved when I swapped out the DVD drive for a newer one.

Hello MacVidCards, I have been searching forever for a Windows 8 solution for my Mac Pro 1,1 that has been maxed out with upgrades to everything.

Could you please provide the tutorial you created, I could not find it on your website.

Thanks

exe files won't run

Hi, I have just installed windows 8 64 bits on my mac pro 1.1 using Thomas Maured method. I was able to install it but when I try to install a program, the exe files won't run. A pop up windows asks me to "choose programe to open this file". I have tried several things I searched on the web, changing registry with notepad, but it still won't run. Any suggestions?

Windows 8 seems to not work well on macs for what ever reason , I would reccomend getting Windows 7 there are less problems installing it and in my experience it is much more stable in bootcamp and a virtual machine than Windows 8 .

You can always try the compatibility mode as suggested here. Right click on the exe file and select properties -> compatibility tab. It's more likely the program did not follow Microsoft guidelines, not necessarily Win 8's fault.
