why is this so cheap? Are there different versions of 8? All I want to know is if I can buy this for $70 and bootcamp without needing prior versions. I just want to play a few games, windows is near useless to me other than that so I don't want to spend a bunch of money

so I can buy 8 and do a bootcamp? I have a new MBP so XP and Vista wont work. I also don't have Win7.

IMHO Windows 7 is the better option here, why buy Windows 8 if you only use it for gaming, you will get annoyed by the start screen in W8.
I saw Click(BBC program on electronics) and there was quite a bit of Criticism on W8.

Correct you would have buy the copy from target since you can't upgrade because you don't have any previous version of windows.

just get confused on upgrade vs regular and what previous systems needed to be installed....I had XP on my 08 MBP but it won't work on my new MBP.

I just tried out win8 at best buy and think it is the worst os ever. Win7 is way better, but osx is the best

Then you should ask if it is a full install, I think it should be but not too familiar with upgrades on the windows side, I thought they always were full install, guess I am(was)wrong.

Depends on the version, it wasn't the best when they released OS X and Lion and Mountain Lion seems to be buggy as well.

W8 is not the worst, Windows Me was the worst and Vista.
But, I think W8 won't be a big one either, lots of inconsistencies.

I've been using Windows 8 since Friday night and haven't seen the start screen much at all. If it comes up, I click Desktop and it goes away. It acts somewhat like Launchpad on OS X.

Yes but Launchpad is not in the way when you start up, nor is it a critical part of OS X.

Haven't used W8 so I might be wrong, seems awkward to me.

Here's the deal as I understand it so far.

  • There are far fewer versions of W8. Pro seems to be the mainstream one.
  • Downloaded upgrade costs $40 straight from Microsoft. Previous version required
  • Retail upgrades to Pro are $70 (as BestBuy or NewEgg). Previous version required.
  • OEM now is the "right" version to buy if you don't have a previous license to upgrade from. Here "Pro" is $139, while "Standard" is $99
  • The "Pro Pack" is the upgrade from W8 to W8Pro.
