Hello,

Problem: After installing Windows 8 on external SSD, and deleting Bootcamp partition on internal drive, Windows 8 hangs (black/blank screen, with just a mouse cursor that I can move).

Hardware:
Late 2013 27 inch iMac
Seagate STAE133 External Thunderbolt Adapter
1.5ft Thunderbolt cable
240GB Intel 520 Series SSD

Steps carried out:

Before deleting the Bootcamp partition, Windows 8 works flawlessly. I installed all the Windows 8 updates, updated the Nvidia drivers, and activated Windows.

However, after I delete/reclaim the Bootcamp partition on the internal drive (using Bootcamp assistant), I am unable to boot into Windows 8 from the external drive. The Windows 8 startup screen ("Welcome" the "Preparing Windows") appears for several seconds, but then a black/blank screen with a mouse cursor is visible.

Any ideas on how to resolve this? Thank you in advance for any ideas.
