On Windows, I can click to download updates and schedule times, and update at scheduled times with no problem. It's the exact opposite case with macOS: it doesn't have a UI for scheduling updates manually, it only shows one after it makes a time for you, and at the scheduled time it will ask to close out of apps you, there's no option to make it download anyway. I've had it tried to install updates in the middle of the night, only to wake up and see that it didn't download because of just one app that wouldn't close without confirmation. macOS also re-downloads updates if you don't install them soon, while Windows doesn't.
I know Windows has problems with forcing users to install updates, though in my experience I can just choose not to install them without issues and handles them more gracefully.

That's the first change that I make to settings on a new Mac: turn off the automatic "Download new updates when available".
I also turn off "Install macOS updates"
I prefer to do updates strictly "non-automatic", at a time that I choose.
