I bought my wife a Macbook Pro for Christmas (our first Mac), but have had a problem with accessing our server running Windows 7 Home Premium where all of our shared files are located (music, video, documents).
I set them up via SMB and can access them just fine, but if the shares are left active when the Macbook goes to sleep, the share hangs and won't start back up again until the machine is rebooted (which requires a hard reset by holding the power button down as it will hang on a convetional restart). My wife is not very technically savvy, so I can't ask her to mount and dismount the shares all the time; I need it to work like her old Windows 7 laptop where she can just click on an icon to open the network folder regardless of the circumstance.
From what I can find via Google, this is not a unique problem, but I have yet to find a resolution to the problem. It's to the point where I'm either going to have to return the Macbook or consider buying an AFP compatible NAS, but I really don't want to spend any more money if I can find a solution. I've also considered finding an AFP server that can run on my Windows box, but the only two I've found are very expensive (more than a good NAS).
I searched here for a solution as well and nothing popped up; any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
