Personally I wouldn't bother with Vista at all. The wow effect is illusory. And Aero who cares?

It runs beautifully. If you want to install vista on your laptop, don't let anyone convince you otherwise. Vista is the most secure version of windows, and it looks really nice. I plan on installing it too when I get a macbook pro in the summer: I'm waiting for Leopard and Santa Rosa.

if you want visual proof of how it runs, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zcqdw7rl82Q

Of course, the more ram you have the better; 2 gigs will have you sailing super smoothly, but 1 gig should suffice, and do you just fine. Having 2 gigs is a good idea anyway; it seems it's swiftly becoming the norm.

Here is a website that shows you how to upgrade your macbook with non-apple brand goods (cheaper): http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34767

I hope you enjoy your new mac.

You don't agree? Show me how Vista isn't more secure than previous versions of windows.

Being secure and looking nice is all that Vista has going for it. O and Age of Conan.

No, I do agree, I just find it interesting how many peoples closing statement seems to be about it's looks. I'm not knocking it or anything, just noticed, thats all.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound so defensive. But yeah, Vista is really nice looking compared to XP and definitely when compared to 2000. Another nice feature of Vista is directx 10 -- when it comes out. Age of Conan looks so sexy under DirectX 10; the sky and water do, anyway.

Vista's aero will run fine on the earliest macbook, I was doing it myself for about a week.

It is much nicer to use than XP is, however it's still not as relaxing to use as OS X.

I've been running Vista on a desktop for the last month and a half as my primary machine to get to grips with it, and whilst I enjoy it, the desktop is now in the back of my car ready to go home tomorrow from university and i'm using my macbook once again as my main machine. It's so much more relaxing and Aero now seems quite bloated in comparison.

I've only got one Vista license, and I'm not using it on my MBP =/

I don't think Vista is that bad, its just that so much is not compatible with it yet. The only software I have that hasn't given me problems is mIRC and Office. But I came from using XP Pro 64bit on this machine, and EVERY piece of software you tried to run on there had problems. So, from where I stand, Vista is a lot better.

I can tell you it runs great with the new release of BootCamp 1.2! Before that it wasn’t that great.

I removed my XP BootCamp installation last night and installed Vista. You won’t be disappointed. :D

No worrys. :)

And yes, it's come a long way since 2000

I had the RC running a few months ago it ran just fine. I'm not sure about gaming at all since I do very little of that(Chess,BZflag). If you do get 2 gigs of ram in it, your going to get 224 MB of Video ram. Age of Conan if dx10 would not run since the current intel GPU is dx9?

I myself will be sticking to XP Pro untill it no longer runs apps I use and by the time that happens I will not be using windows any longer. :D

Age of Conan will run on both DX9 and DX10. You can also chop off heads in real-time and carry them around with you to show the whole virtual world.

Im running Vista on a MBP, 2.16 C2D, 2GB ram, 128mb X1600, and although it runs great, it runs extremely hot, and the fan is always on.
When running Vista, the mouse seems fairly erratic, however I have not spent the time, and searched for touchpad drivers to calm it down.

However yes, it does run extremely smooth, on a MBP.

Installed Vista this morning.... :(

Well I'm encountering a problem.
Fatal error on installing mac drivers.... anyone else had this and knows how to overcome it?
(it basically means I can't do much with trackpad or Brightness/volume...help.)

First problems outside of the rightclick/trackpad scroll/isight driver F1-F7malarky:
•The MacOS partition recognised? I assume all my file transfers need to be done using USB when in Vista.... (probably should have set up a dump partition which is dual compatible.
•Wobbly Mouse (sensitivity unstable)
•CDs take an age to open
•Damb secuirity questions (did you click this, did you mean to, ever visited in Estonia, did you wear protection).

Any info guys on some fixes? what is this AutoHotKey I've heard about for temp fix of trackpad?

Comments:
The sytem works fine if a little slow (files stop downloading when unrelated warnings pop up so it means baby sitting when up loading open office and quicktime). CD eject works. Aero is no big deal the windows just look more crowded now (Fat bumfy windows make the screen look 800x600 as theres no room for icons-probably going to use the hideous windows classic theme). Don't get me started on gadgets or the archaic installation WIZARDS!! Seems better than XP.
