I need to access a windows webfolder from my powerbook. The url is straightforward, for ex. http://home.mycompany.com/, but when I try to connect via the Finder I get an error saying I can't connect to the server because it can't be found on the network. Any pointers?

The "http:" tells your computer and the network that you want to access "home.mycompany.com" via the "http" protocol. If you want to access it using Windows protocol, then you might try "smb://home.mycompany.com/" You might also try just plain "home.mycompany.com" or such like.
