Hi all. I really need some help regarding installing Windows on my C1D iMac- I can't install any version of Windows using Bootcamp, so I need an alternative method.

Firstly, I'm not sure what the problem with Bootcamp is. I partition my drive, restart to begin installation, then all I end up with is a black screen but with loads of optical drive activity. After about 10 mins, this activity stops and I then have to restart the computer. I think the problem may be related to the fact that I also can't dim the brightness of my monitor- if I try setting the brightness to anything less than 100%, the screen just goes black.

Anyway, I've tried everything I can think of and started a few threads on getting it working with bootcamp but now I give up using it! I pray with each new release of Bootcamp that it might fix my problem but alas, nothing so far!

Is there any way I can install XP/Vista on an external USB drive? I have access to a MacBook if that would help. Has anyone tried installing Wndows on a partition without using bootcamp? Is it even possible? Any help you could give would be really appreciated.

EDIT- I have checked the MacRumours guide for installing onto an external drive. I'm reluctant to try that method because it requires opening up the MacBook and it's not mine- I don't want to be responsible for breaking anything!
