I have a couple of business emails that have come to be with a winmail.dat attachment that I cannot open on our MBP. I have done some reading and see that there is an app that can be used but it only accepts files 5mb or less...

If you can't read the contents of the mail, ask the sender to re-send the mail in plain text. The attachment by itself is worthless, content-wise.

Sounds like something funky occurred in receiving (or sending) an email with an attachment. Tbh, I've not really seen this occur since the prior decade. I didn't think it was an issue any more for OS X.

Only had our Mac for a few months and in the last week or so I have noticed this. One company resent it in a zip which shrunk the size down to just below 5 mb's, so I was able to use something to get it up and running but a bit of a pain. Worked though.

Yeah its odd.

I got a lot of emails, and I've not seen this happen at all.

Did you try using a different email app, such as postbox or thunderbird.

What email provider are you using?

thanks, but not sure I would pay for an app as I don't get many of these...windmaildat.com hosts a free site to use to get at these so not sure the difference..

It's a Microsoft Outlook thing. There are winmail viewers in the app store.

It is an outlook thing, but I get a lot of emails from folks who use outlook and I've not had to deal with this issue for a very long time. I wonder if its something else, which is why I recommend trying a different email client.

I rarely see it now also. As stated in the Microsoft article (linked above by Mikael H), it was an issue with older (2003, 2007) versions of Outlook.
