Stuffit will unpack .zip and .rar up to rar version 2. I believe Gumby will work with rar version 3, ad is useful for a host of other things too.

Versiontracker.com is your friend.

You should have Stuffit already on your computer. UnRarX is another good one. Your Mac should be able to open up .zip .rar .tar .gz right off the bat.

I was going to suggest the use of the command-line unarchiver from the makers of the RAR format - it seems that UnRARX includes that little command-line program and uses it internally. So no need for that then. I recommend UnRARX - the last time I used it, it was an early beta. My, has it improved since the early v0.2 days!

The version of StuffIt that Apple supplies doesn't seem to open all RARs. I now have version 9 and haven't yet come across a single RAR that I can't open.

Yes yes it has.

Its awesome now.

Nermal -- I bought the most recent one and did a test on a few files, it stuggled and failed on 2/9 of them.

I did. It seems to me that Stuffit has problems with password protected files.
