Wipe 3GS on 4.0.1 Jailbreak to Sell it?

So, I'm most likely selling my iPhone 3GS this weekend.

I've googled around & can't find an updated answer to sell a 3GS that is jailbroke via Jailbreakme on 4.0.1

Anyone? lol.

So far I've just gone through manually deleting contacts, photos, logging out of app accounts, is there anything more I can do? Is the buyer always going to see "Andrew's iPhone?"

I was going to give them my iTunes account with it because it has $42 of apps, and then of course change the account info so it's there name, billing info & billing address. Maybe this would prevent setting it up as "new iphone," but would most likely keep it as "Andrew's iPhone" unless there's another way to rename it..


I didn't know about TinyUmbrella before, maybe I should do that? I don't know..... !

Plug it to itunes and right click on the iphones name.
You can rename it to iphone 3GS or whatever you want.
Dont give him your itunes login and password. Just leave the apps there if you want and log out of your itunes account thru settings or delete them.
He can use his own itunes account to buy and transfer apps if he wants.

well I just installed tinyumbrealla and saved my 4.0.1 blobs locally...

so now I just find the final 4.0.1 release ( a link would be great!) and shift restore in itunes.. have the TSS server running & I'm good to go? i don't need to use pwnage tool, right? just going to use jailbreakme again (if the site is still up lol)

I read on another thread here that I may need to copy the tinyumbrella ecid and change it to the one that is numbers and letters (hexadecimal)

You're sure you saved 4.0.1 and not 4.0.2 right?
Not sure if Apple is still releasing 4.0.1 since the new firmware has been out for a few days now.

yes 4.0.1, didn't upgrade to 4.02.

I'm sure someone has the final release of 4.0.1 hosted somewhere to download.

You dont need to upgrade to 4.0.2 to grab the blobs for it.
You can download any official firmware files from here:

Starts tss with TU and then restore thru itunes to the ipsw that you downloaded from above.

do I need to change the auto generated ECID into hexadecimal? you know, the letters and numbers it give when you hover your pointer over it after you click on advanced mode

ok well i saved both versions, the non hex version and the hex version... now i'm going to try to restore with 4.0.1 and see what the heck happens

quick question, will "Setup as new iPhone" force you to upgrade or will it let you decide after you set up?

No, it wont force you to upgrade.
Setup as new phone.
Dont restore it from your backup or anything with your info obviously...

Plugged into iTunes.

It wants me to restore, but only to 4.0.2, but I want 4.0 or 4.0.1

Currently dling 4.0.1 from iClarified above.

Any tips on how to restore using that file?

You cannot unless you have shshs saved for 4.0 or for the version you want to restore to.

I found how to shift + restore.

Was able to restore using 4.0.1

Then used jailbreakme and ultrasn0w.

Now it's ready for sale.

Besides removing the sim, is there anything else I should do before selling?
