I use a 27' Mac with El Capitan. I bought a 5TB external drive, for my Time Machine (it said formatted for Mac). But it was NTSF. I plugged it into my mac and went to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities/the New Drive it showed as NTSF. I open Erase, Named it and format as OS X Extended (Journaled) and hit Erase. It came back as Can not Recognized the Drive. So I thought I did something wrong. I tried to do it again, when I plugged in I get "The Disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". Could I do it with Wipe Drive? Or is there another way? Thanks Ab0563718

Try opening Disk Utility and re-erasing the hard drive. Verify that you are selecting the entire drive and not just the current partition.
