Wiped my hard drive, now OS Sierra won’t reinstall

Hi all. I erased my MacBook Pro circa 2011 today so I can donate it. I tried reinstalling High Sierra twice and got the following screen:






After restarting in internet recovery mode I ran First Aid from this screen:


The internal OS X Base System is not mounted. I‘m not sure what to try next. Anybody have any ideas?

Did you download High Sierra recently? If not, make a new installer.

You can try setting the date back:

Installing macOS or OS X: What to do when ‘the installer payload failed signature check’ or ‘this copy of the install OS X application cannot be verified’

If you encounter an error when trying to install a fresh operating system, it could be a problem with the date and time.

Or you can try installing to an APFS partition.

The APFS partition worked! Saved my old Mac! Thanks so much.

It's been so long since I installed High Sierra. I forget what the APFS rules were. Is it something like:
1) new install = APFS
2) existing install = HFS+ or APFS
?

Mine is HFS+, it could have been a Sierra install updated to High Sierra.
I have Mojave on HFS+ up to 10.14.3. Then APFS for 10.14.4, 5, and 6.
