A friend of mine upgraded his phone and is trying to wipe his old one before he gives it to someone else.

Here's what he had to say:

Prior to getting the new phone I updated the gen 1 iPhone to the newest version of the software and it did a lot of great things for the phone(no problems connecting anymore).

Then I took my phone to get the new one and Apple did their deal and I walked out with a working new one and my original one with the old sim card in it.

I got home and just tonight went to delete all the settings on the original so I could send it to you. But....the screen is stuck on the usb cable to iTunes graphic!

There is a small lock at the top of the phone itself. I hooked it up to iTunes but it wants to activate the phone! I restored the software to original(it let me via iTunes)but the screen will not go to the Home Page!

Any ideas?

Seems like once this happens the phone is unusable; he just wants to wipe it before he sends it out so it can be used by someone else.
