Wired tethering from current iPhone in Lion: Does it work?

I can't seem to get wired tethering working from my iPhone 7 Plus with iOS 11 Beta, or from my wife's iPhone 6s with 10.3, a 2008 white MacBook Core 2 Duo.

Does this not work any longer in Lion? Works fine on my mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro with High Sierra.

i still couldn’t get this working on my wife’s Lion MacBook. I could get wireless tethering to work but not wired. I prefer wired for a few reasons. We ended up taking my High Sierra MacBook Pro on this trip.

The original plan was to take her lower end Lion MacBook because it’s configured for her and she was going to be the primary user. Also, we don’t care as much if it gets banged up by our young kids on family trips.
