Wired USB Connection to tbMBP Issues

Has anyone tried connecting via usb cable from a HP printer to the new MBP? Doesn't work with the USB to USB-C adapter. Tried to connect it by my old '12 MBP, worked no problem. College wifi has hilariously complicated system that won't allow for wireless printing setup. Their response? Wired or buy a new printer with not a 100% chance of working. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Have you tried HP support? You're surely not the only one to have tried to hook up a new MBP to their printer.
