I was trying to figure out the difference between all of the 11 channel assignments for a 802.11b wireless routers and found some very useful information so I thought I'd pass it forward!
Here is a diagram that I found
(http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,6683522~root=wlan~mode=flat)
This diagram explains why experts say that 1, 6, and 11 are the best channels to use due to those channels intersecting the least channels. I tracked how many channels that each channel are overlapping and I found these numbers out:
channel#...overlapping#
1...........................4
2...........................5
3...........................5
4...........................7
5...........................8
6...........................8
7...........................8
8...........................6
9...........................5
10.........................5
11.........................4
On that note, 1 and 11 basically have the same chance of overlapping a neighbor, although the variable is how many actual routers there are on each channel. I would consider channel #6 almost as an alternative if 1 and 11 are filled.
cheers!
