iOS Wireless Communication Question

hi,

I've been looking through the iPhone SDK and articles and have not found an answer to my question. Using the SDK, is it possible to search for wireless devices (802.11), and set up a socket to communicate with them? I'm planning on building my own, simple, devices and want the iPhone to be able to receive and send information to them.
