Wireless earbuds audio lag on Youtube app on iPhone

I got some new 1More Stylish earbuds (they are great!) except that when I watch Youtube via the iPhone app, there is audio lag on most videos. I've read this is something about the codec that YT uses. I have no lag on movies I have downloaded with apple TV on my iPhone X.

What's weird is, I can go to Safari, log into Youtube there, and the same videos have no lag. What gives? Can I fix the app somehow or do I have to do this through Safari for now?
