Howdy everyone,
I've been having a strange, random issue lately where the internet connection on my MacBook Pro randomly stalls or hangs, requiring me to toggle my Wi-Fi on and off. The connection itself to my wireless router never drops or changes in signal strength; full bars all the time. Toggling wifi off and on again always fixes the issue (temporarily), and I never need to fully reboot the system. It happens sporadically and so far, I can't make the issue occur on-demand. I've also confirmed that's it is not my entire home internet connection, as I was able to successfully browse the internet on my iPhone via Wi-Fi during a period where my MBP's connection was stalled out.
Googling for a solution doesn't seem to turn up anything current that matches my symptoms. This old post about Yosemite is the most similar, but a) I'm on Catalina 10.15.5 and b) my issue doesn't occur nearly as often as that guy's did.
It seems to typically manifest itself as I attempt to google something in Safari's search bar, and page loading just begins to hang. Some solutions tend to suggest that maybe Safari's DNS Pre-fetching is the issue, but wouldn't that impact just Safari? During these "episodes" I notice other internet-connected apps, particularly Dropbox grays-out and shows a "Connecting..." status. So it seems system-wide. I also thought it might be due to Time Machine performings backups to my Apple Time Capsule, but that didn't line up with my latest connection stall.
I also seem to recall this happening every so often back with my old 13-inch MacBook Pro (but I no longer own that mac), and here I experiencing it again with a nearly-new 16-in Macbook Pro running 10.15.5. (New mac was set up as a completely new system and transfer or Migration of my older system.)
I'm not exactly sure how to troubleshoot this. I'm not really skilled enough to notice anything out of place in Console. My Apple Time Capsule is up to date with the latest firmware 7.9.1. My home wifi network is at the top of my preferred network list, and my signal strength between router and mac is strong and never drops. I do have custom Network Locations for Google DNS and Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 DNS services; I never use macOS's "Automatic" setting when I'm at home; only when crappy hotel & airplane wifi require it.
Any ideas? Thanks!!
