Version 4 Linksys WMP56G PCI Card no Longer Compatible (from the 7/26/2004 news page)
Although earlier revisions (like version 2) of the Linksys WMP54G PCI Adapter (Broadcom chip based) worked with Airport 3.1-3.4.2, a reader with a version 4 model (short card height) reported problems:
" I just wanted to pass along that the latest version of the Linksys WMP54G PCI (the skinny one - v4) may not work with Macs. I purchased one this morning and have tried it in a B & W 450 and a G5 Dual 2. The card does not show up in the system profiler or the network system preference at all on either machine. Works great in a Win XP machine. (I asked if he had Airport 3.1 or later installed - earlier model Linksys WMP54G cards were broadcom chip based and worked with Airport 3.1 to 3.4.2 (latest to date), but Linksys could have changed the chipset. I've seen that happen in the past with their older 802.11b products. Also a MDD owner running a PCI 802.11g card noted it did not work/wasn't recognized if an Airport card was also installed. Removing the Airport card solved that problem.-Mike)
Mac users may want to look for the v2 of this card (regular PCI height). Don't know what is going on for sure, but this is my experience.

(I asked about the version of Airport installed on his B&W G3 and if the G5 had an airport card installed.)
I did have airport 3.4.2 installed on the B & W. All software updates (OS X 10.3.4 and all of the goodies) are current on both machines. On the G5, I did NOT have a Airport Extreme card installed."
Within minutes of posting this another reader replied he also had no luck with the version 4 (short) Linksys WMP54G model working with Airport either. So the version 4 cards must not use the Broadcom chipset that the earlier versions did. I've wondered if this would happen over time based on past experience with Linksys products (many "versions" of the same model number product.)
