Wireless router - help!!!

I was told that switching to Airport Express would solve the range problems of my wireless system, but it hasn't.

The Airport Express is plugged in in my sitting room. If I move my laptop just TWENTY FEET away into the next room, with a line-of-sight between the computer and the unit, I get no signal.

WTF??!
