Realised that with an iPhone 5 (and assuming the iPad mini and the new iPad can do this too) that syncs wirelessly to iTunes can now be restored and have its software updated wirelessly from iTunes 11. You can also restore from a backup on the computer wirelessly, whereas before you had to connect the Lightening cable.
