Is applecare+ a must have for you given the rumoured $499 cost? Or don’t you think potential damage on a watch is likely?

I've always had AC+ on all my AWs (S0/3/4/7/Ultra), I bang into everything all the time, I smashed my S0 screen about 2 months after AC+ expired (extension was not offered back then), I got my S4 replaced under AC+. For me it's a given, accidents happen and are more likely on a watch on your arm than with a phone or a computer ...

The repair cost has been the same for previous watches as well. My S7 Ti is also 499 without AC+.

I bought for my s5 titanium and I didn’t really need to use it. I did an “accident “ claim but it was not necessary in hindsight.

~$180 to repair with AC ($99 AC + $79 fee) versus ~$500 without AC.

Unless you think you have greater than 24% probability of damaging it in 2 years (more than cosmetically, which they will refuse to repair), you are better off going without AC.
99/(499-79) = 0.24

I thought this was supposed to be a rugged watch?

Biggest risk is probably losing it, for which you are definitely better going without AC, as they will laugh at you when you try and claim for a lost watch.

My experience with batteries on Apple Watches is the battery health goes down to a little above 80% and stubbornly stays there, which they will refuse to replace.
