WMV fast forwarding in VLC crashes/freezes mbp 15"??

So I downloaded a wmv iron man file onto my mbp, and i used vlc to play it. I fast forward the bar to skip scenes, and when i skip too far, the video freezes and Command + Q doesn't close down VLC......ultimately i am forced to hold down the power button because even restarting or shutting down my mbp via the apple logo in the top left corner doesn't register.........

wtf is this all about??? anyone have a clue what it could be?
