Won't boot with lots of USB items plugged in?

Hi,

My dad has a USB hub plugged into the back of his 30" ACD with a few items connected. It just sits at the white screen indefinitely, until I disconnect it and then I see the Apple logo straight away and it boots up.

What would cause this?
