Because I'm spending $229 then get it back in rebate... and if I sell it, I will get less than $229, so might as well not get it right? Since I don't need it that is.

Don't forget you will still get your $229 rebate plus whatever you get selling the iPod.

It is impossible for you to be out of pocket unless you pay someone to take the iPod off you. ;)

HOW ARE YOU A COLLEGE STUDENT???

Get iPod - 229
Rebate - 229
Sell - 190

WHATEVER YOU SELL IT FOR = PROFIT

student

Taking in that you are most likely a student then I think you should get the iPod and get what ever you can for it. Then go out and buy a basic math book.

God, don't they teach word problems in school anymore?

1) A student travelling North on a train to Chicago buys a iPod for $X of which he is completely REIMBURSED by a rebate.
2) He then sells it to another student travelling South on a train to St. Louis for $Y

How much does the student have at the end of teh day?
A) (-X) + (+X) = 0 + (+Y) = $Y
B) Less than X b/c he was too drunk to mail in the rebate
C) All of the above

no. the best is you take the ipod and give it away for free (to me). then the transaction is neutral to you and you don't lose money.

i'm so worried about the future now.

You have ruined mac and cheese for me.
Every time I bust open a box of Kraft, I will think of you and your poor mathematics.

I first read this thread early this morning.
I thought I was missing something.

After 4 coffees, lunch and a couple hours on the phone with HMRC, I tried again.

OP, is this a trick question?

Because if you're being serious…

Your logic fails. Epicly.

You get back $229 from the rebate, and profit from whatever you sell it for.

Good Grief! I hope the OP is not planning a career in banking or finance. Considering that the rebate only applies to college students, I'd say the OP graduated from high school by some miracle.

banking or finance would be ok. seems not to matter if you are off by a few billion dollar there.

but what if he becomes a surgeon? it matters if you are off by an arm or a leg or a pe...:eek:

I was going to chime in with a witticism of my own, but I can't top this.

The Government might work for him. If you're off by a billion here or there, it's no big deal. Like if an individual loses a penny out of their pocket.

NB: I work for the Government, I can make jokes like that ;-)

Yes, you are correct. You would be better off not getting the iPod and then selling it.

(yes, I'm being sarcastic, and civilization is doomed. Perhaps he could run for Congress since their math is fuzzy as well).

Are you going to public school or private school? I'm just curious which system it was that failed you so miserably.

tax

You do have to pay sales tax on the retail price of the ipod, which you don't get back as part of the rebate. So if you don't need it, and can't be bothered to sell it, you shouldn't get it.

Unless you live in the UK, its just a rebate for a percentage of the price.

For example;

iPod Touch 8GB £165

The max rebate you can get is £145, so we have to pay £20 for the bloody thing. Then again, it would sell for more than £20 so thats profit either way, but not as much!
